As the field of musculoskeletal oncology continues to develop globally and in India, it is time for us to reflect on what is required for it to grow further so that we are able to offer the best care to the maximum number of patients.
Helen Keller said “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much”. This was the driving principle behind setting up IMSOS.
For advances in musculo skeletal oncology to occur we need a host of clinical specialties along with nursing, rehabilitation and support staff interacting on a continuous basis. IMSOS offers such a platform. Industry too plays an important role in furthering this progress, both in terms of introducing novel drug molecules and bringing current drugs into the realms of affordability for patients in our socio economic conditions. Similarly, without the support of the implant industry it is difficult to develop affordable quality options for reconstruction. Their participation in our society will help foster a mutually supportive relationship that will ultimately benefit patients.
By virtue of their sheer rarity sarcomas need a collaborative effort between individuals and institutions for meaningful results to emerge, from both, prospective trials and retrospective clinical data. This is best facilitated by an organization like IMSOS that aims to bring all individuals involved in sarcoma care together. The paucity of training opportunities in this field is also an area that IMSOS will seek to address by facilitating opportunities for training and helping to match individuals desirous of further developing their skills with institutions that offer this facility.
Our socio economic milieu is unique. Solutions and protocols applicable to the Western world need not necessarily be the most suitable in our scenario. Our large numbers coupled by the sheer native ingenuity necessary to offer quality health care in a resource challenged population will help us develop solutions that can be adapted everywhere. Over the years the collective work and results of IMSOS members will help position us as an organization of global repute.
Lao-tzu said “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. By setting up IMSOS we have begun this journey. It will take time and concentrated efforts from all of us to achieve our goals but the satisfaction gained by building a society that will help further this specialty make all the efforts worthwhile.
Borrowing Barrack Obama’s words “The road ahead will be long. We may not get there in one year or even in one term. But, I have never been more hopeful that we will get there. I promise you, we as a people will get there.” This paraphrases exactly how the founding members feel about IMSOS and the goals we have envisaged for the society.
